Big Challenge Launch 2018

The 2018/19 IKIC Barnsley Big Challenge is now in full swing. Teams from both Primary and Secondary schools across Barnsley are setting up businesses and competing against each other in a competition that will see them; come up with an idea, market it, sell it and develop their venture, before hopefully making it through to a ‘Dragons Den’ style final next year to decide the title of Best Business.

On Wednesday 14th November, over 100 young people gathered at Horizon Community College to launch the Secondary Schools competition. Craig Burgess of Genius Division; based out of the Digital Media Centre and a specialist in marketing, gave the audience a masterclass in branding their products and ventures, drawing on a recent episode of the BBC series “The Apprentice” to highlight what works well and what does not.

The competition is not only an opportunity for young people to experience what it is like to set up a business, but also to develop key skills which could include communication, team work and understanding finance which will be valuable to them in whatever path they choose to take in the future.

The teams are all busy preparing their products and gearing up for their first major sales push which will be capturing those Christmas shoppers in the run up to the festive season.

We are always looking for mentors to work with our young people, offer them a third eye opinion on their businesses and support them in some of the decisions they make with their ventures.
