Big Challenge Celebration Event

Kasey’s Kakes won the prestigious Best Secondary Business Award at this year’s I Know I Can (IKIC) Barnsley Big Challenge Awards, on Wednesday 23 May at The Civic in Barnsley, whilst The Wood Workshop won the Best Primary Business Award.

The awards ceremony marked the end of this year’s challenge which has given young people the chance to experience what it is like to set up and run a business. The competing teams have successfully traded throughout the academic year and have been supported by their schools as well as a range of mentors from the business community.

To choose the final winners the teams pitched to a panel of expert judges last month including Rose Dyson (Pura Cosmetics), Helen Valentine (BMBC), Catherine Spooner (Henry Boot) and Mandy Reavil (NPS Barnsley) at the Digital Media Centre. Here they were judged on innovation, the potential for future growth, profit and the overall quality of the pitch.

Year 9 student Kasey Suttle from Kirk Balk Academy is the young entrepreneur behind Kasey’s Kakes which produces a range of baked goods. The judges felt that Kasey’s Kakes was a business that they would all invest their own money into and could see the potential for growth in the company. On the evening Kasey also scooped the awards for Potential for Growth and Best Final Report. As part of the winning prize Kasey has received a three night trip to Madrid.

Best Primary School Business was awarded to The Wood Workshop from The Ellis Church of England Primary School. Freya Winstanley produced a range of wooden items. Judge Catherine Spooner, Communications Officer at Henry Boot praised the passion and innovation of the primary winner “Having won Best Primary Business, I hope that The Wood Workshop will go from strength to strength in the future and will now be spurred on to continue, hopefully expanding the product range and sourcing outlets from which to sell the high quality and original products..” As part of the prize The Wood Workshop have won an indoor skydiving experience.
